Orlando is thought to have gotten its name from Orlando Reeves who died in the area during the war against the Seminole Indians in 1836. The city of Orlando was not incorporated until 1875 during the post Civil War Reconstruction and flourished as the hub of Florida's citrus industry from 1875 until the great freeze of 1894-1895.
In the following years, Orlando became a popular resort town. Through the 1920's, there was a boom in construction in Orlando that continued until several hurricanes hit the area in the late 1920s. The Great Depression struck in 1929 and further helped to slow down Orlando's economy and growth. |
Things took a big turn for the better in 1965, when Walt Disney announced he would be building his theme park, Walt Disney World, near Orlando. Disney decided to build his theme park in Orlando rather than Tampa or Miami because Orlando was inland and would therefore receive less damage from eventual hurricanes and because the land was cheap.
When Walt Disney World opened in 1971 Orlando saw a rapid rise in population and economic growth. Thanks to the opening of this famous theme park and the wonderful year-round weather, tourism has become the prime motivator of the county's economy and Orlando has become one of the top choices in vacation destinations in the world. |
