It's also a quick way to get from Orlando to Tampa, and if you want to stop halfway, then Lakeland is the place you'll stop. The city of Lakeland, a population of 94,000, is in Polk County, Florida and is known not just as the midway area, but also known for its entertainment. |
The Lakeland Center has over 500 events every year, from entertainment, sports, and conventions, to Broadway shows and concerts. If you like Johnny Depp and you are visiting Lakeland, you have to stop at Southgate Shopping Center. This mall was featured in Johnny Depps movie Edward Scissorhands.
Lakeland has an exciting history, founded in 1870s as the rail lines extended to the area. Abraham Munn founded the town in 1882 and after many town names were rejected (Red Bug, Rome City, and even Munnville) Lakeland was established. |

I wonder if Lakeland got its name from the more than 38 lakes in the area? During World War II, many young airmen were taught to fly at Lakeland Lodwick airfield. Can you imagine, pilot fighters and bombers trained at Lodwick? History in our backyard.
As Central Florida went through the boom growth, Lakeland was looked to for Orlando real estate and homes in the Orlando, Florida area because of its close proximity to Orlando and surrounding cities like Winter Haven and Haines City.
